Over the past couple of weeks it has been our pleasure to have printed an entire solo show for illustrator Andrew Thorpe. The show is as delightfully described as it is visually appealing. Taking you around the world, and simultaneously around Andrew’s mind all aboard his incredible penmanship.

It closes on Sunday, so make sure to get down and enjoy them before it all goes down.

Another beauty filled issue of artlicks hot of the press. Issue Six invited artist Pio Abad to contribute a work to our feature, Artist Commission. Just for the magazine, Pio has made the perfume advert, LAIR DU TEMPS (CAMEL) – with a sample that you will have to decide to peel & sniff, or leave to brood. Alongside the work is a profile text by writer and curator, Roma Clemie.

We printed a run of 800 on various papers and colours. Side stitched and tape bound.

Hato Press has arrived in Hong Kong!

At least some of our prints have. We did some (a lot) printing for artist Lio Yeung’s last year and he is now having a solo exhibition in HK. His drawings are absolutely beautiful and our printing is not bad either. His show is still on at the moment, ending this week. So if you are in HK or can afford an air ticket to HK, go and see it!

Last month we printed a small publication that is a collaboration from Jamie George and Katie Schwab who are currently exhibiting at Jerwood Space. Design from Helios Capdevila. The publication is available free at the space where the show runs until 28th April.

Printed on cyclus 115gsm. In Federal Blue and Gold.

A recent photography book from Edward Newton, designed by The office of Optimism. This lovely loose-sheet publication is printed on olin recycled cream 120gsm, with covers on a 250gsm Olin recycled cream. The publication is shrink wrapped, and Ed is selling them over on Highchair-editions.

Dalston Collaborations. Back in December we were asked as part of an exchange project co-ordinated by Happen Projects to take part in their little shops scheme. Teaming up with Dalston stationers we had a window of opportunity and chose to inject some colour into what was turning into a cold winter.

Our colour copies, are some old colour tests we ran quite a while ago now, showing gradients of all the colours as they work in harmony with one another. The whole project has received tremendous feedback, and with a whole host of local designers and artists, there was no wonder it would.

Thanks has to go to Giovanna, Irina and Kasia for organising things at HP, and getting us involved in the first place. And also Mr. Dattani of Dalston Stationers for allowing us to work with him and his lovely shop.

The collaborations are running until the 12th January so have a walk around Dalston and get to know the local businesses.

A little print catch up to start the new year off. Here are some lovely prints, and fun jobs we printed just toward the end of last year. With colour greats from Rosie Pearmain. Unfortunately we didn’t get to go on this Ski Trip, but Adam Duckett of Ravensbourne College will be there, and for whoever is going, his the talent behind these good looking crossfold booklets. Great fun to print, with design that was just made for the Riso.

We’ve recently printed some great postcards for art culture connoisseurs Scraffer a mystery artist, these will be going inside their latest publication.

Over the past few weeks we’ve been busy printing works for a risograph specific show taking place at Mill Co. Gallery on Vyner street this month. We took some time to talk to artist and curator Kavel Rafferty.

(HATO): Kavel, where would you place yourself in the art and design world?

(Kavel): Oh god I wouldn’t, I’m just an illustrator minding my own business! I live in Barcelona and work away quietly there, as long as I’m making enough money to get by, I’m happy.

How do you feel your relationship is to print making, do you see it as an integral part of the process of making art?

I love the process of making a print, whether it’s a Screen-print or a Linocut or more recently Risograph, I still love the happy accidents which occur when printing and there is nothing like seeing your new print on paper.

Is a piece finished before it´s been printed?

It can be finished, but it definitely adds another dimension to the image, depending on the paper inks you use.

You’ve been using the risograph process for a while now, what initially drove you to it?

The first time I used it was an experiment really, I think I read something on the net about low cost printing, risograph really can make art affordable. I love the fact that it looks slightly old fashioned, but is actually a modern process. It has a low-fi feel. I also like that you don’t know exactly how the print will work until you see the finished article. I’ve mostly used screen printing for my work in the past, bit messy, but I do still love it.

The show you have at The Mill Co. project has around 25 artists, how did you go about gathering such a group?

I chose people who I knew would have an interest in collecting, either as artists or just as a hobby. I have had a lovely response from people, I think it inspired people, I hope so.

It’s a real mix of styles and techniques, such a lovely surprise each time I opened a file from a different artist, like a mini Christmas except I hate Christmas, so even better!

How was the briefing for the show, obviously a lot of people to organise, how did the other artists take to your use of the risograph for this show?

Some confusion to start, as I don’t think anyone of the 25 artists had used the process before, it’s hard to imagine your work in a ‘risograph’ way to begin with, it get’s easier. I limited people to 2 colours, partly due to finances, but also I like limitations, it makes artist and designers more resourceful and creative. After all there is a lot you can do with two colours… One of my collections is record company sleeves (120 of which are on display at the show) from the 50s and 60s, they are mostly one or two colour prints and amazing, an inspiration to anyone using a limited palette of colours.

You are taking on the curation of this show, is this something you’ve done before? Ever on this scale?

I have been involved with small exhibitions before, but no, nothing on this scale, well it’s still pretty small, but it is weird being the boss! Mill Co. project have been amazing, lovely working with them and you at Hato too of course!

(Print: Things in Bottles That Aren’t Ships – Nick White)

This week we were lucky enough to print the first edition of prints for Evermade. An artist platform and publishing space for collaborators. Evermade sets its self apart from the growing printed material world of illustration, Art & Design by scouting new unseen artists and with that fresh interesting work.

The artists pair off working from selected colour palettes to create pieces that interact with, but also define themselves, from one another.

We’ve just finished printing 20×20 magazine. A twice annually published magazine, they describe themselves as a square platform for all sorts of creative projects.

For the past few weeks we’ve been steadily printing a whole collection of prints (25) ahead of a risograph specific show, curated by Kavel Rafferty, opening in The Mill Co Project, (Vyner Street). We’re not going to show you the prints yet, but we will give a few sneak peeks and hopefully talk to Kavel before the show. A recent portfolio project we’ve printed for Man kit Au-yeung he used the 4 colour process really well, getting away with using 3. Medium blue, yellow and pink. The blue acts as the cyan and black. They look really great, Man Kit is a fashion designer and is in the process of sending out hundreds of portfolio’s.

We’ve just started working with ANDOR gallery, tonight is the launch for Herman Van Ingelgem. The Gallery is situated in a restored cafe in Hackney and has a lovely balance between the social coffee shop, and the Gallery.

Good friends and super studio Jail-Make dropped by this morning to print the packing for a little personal project their putting out. The lap-top stands are beautiful, and of course work perfectly. Thanks for mine guys, can’t wait to put them in place. My custom 13″ solid reclaimed pine stands, are just one of many materials Jail will be re-using for these products.

This weeks super print has been made by our star printern Mariana Lobao

Mariana has been with us for about 3 months now and has become quite the master with the riso. She knows her way round it like the back of her hand and as a result she now knows how to get the absolute best results for her artworks.

She has a self confessed obsession egypt and to show this has created a range of beautiful prints. Apparently working on an accompanying journal.

Mariana has just started her second year in Design at LCC so be on the look out for her, she’s already paving herself a very nice path in the way on design, illustration and now printing.

New Art licks available.

Designed and printed by Ken Kirton Art Licks is now in it’s 5th issue and is settling down comfortably as a quarterly art space that’s written by

the artists that are turning underground heads so you get the real picture and not just a view through someone else’s glasses.

This month see’s the beautifully informative, if some what challenging read. Roland Barthes – The Pleasure of the Text. Translated by Nick Davies in what becomes an almost unreal language of txt. Simply put (on the inside cover) ‘A Cultural Experiment into Sociolinguistic Values’

Nick tells us he plans to get a copy of the book into every library he’s ever used, clogging the literary arteries of small district libraries and grand university collections. An interesting concept following through to distribution.

Sometimes the most challenging jobs, are often the most rewarding. Recently we worked with MEADHAM KIRCHHOFF and helped them realise their idea for an invite in print, working with their designers we completed the mammouth layered job and just look at the results.

This has absolutely been print of the week!

A few weeks ago now, TWSU opened up what they call their haberdashery east, a kiosk located inside Roughtrade East.

The guys at TWSU have been working hard for a while now and are getting rave reviews and plenty of press as they push forward with more workshops, talks and products. We were very happy to help them with print from stickers covering their products to instruction sheets.

Back once again it’s the Poundshop 2011 this year boasting over 40 designers and a bespoke interior created by Fabien Cappello.

As like before we’ve been stockpiling our test prints and offprints and managed to accumulate mountains of paper, so we had to go bigger and better this time around. Peckham is moving. To run along side the annual Free Film Festival which takes place in a variety of places, from Nunheads cemetary to the top of Peckhams much loved car park. This year will be the first year for PAMI; Peckham Artist Moving Image festival, showcasing a wave of local moving image makers around some of the best spaces South London has to offer.

PAMI is an initiative to highlight moving image artwork, made by an international selection of artists, in a concentrated four-day programme of exhibitions and events across Peckham. A temporary dining experience in Dalston. Ridley Road Market will play host to a new project from The Decorators and Atelier ChanChan as these designers and architects transform a void in the market into, in their words,  a podium for outdoor exhibitionist eating.

They opened last night and will continue to run until the 24th September, Wednesday – Saturday ONLY. Open from 11am – 11pm, the site will welcome a new guest chef each day for take-away lunch and a sit down dinner, using only the freshest foods available on the market.

A new feature to the Hato blog, will be our print of the week, we’ve had some great prints going through the press lately and we need to show you guys.

Up-cycling in Peckham

If you don’t already know there’s a carnival of up-cycling, hand made, vintage and free workshops taking place in the heart of Peckham. Residing in The New Gallery every 3rd saturday.

Set up by recent LCC graduate Tatiana Woolrych the jumble is growing bigger every month. And with one of the catchiest moto’s around “USE IT UP, WEAR IT OUT, MAKE IT DO, OR DO WITHOUT” they’re bound to keep up their sustainable growth for a long time to come.

Previous jumbles have seen knitting, screen-printing, a photo booth, and head-piece workshops all taking place in the Gallery for free. Its a truly great day out. Grab a bargain, a pint, some food, and a little bit of what Peckham has to offer.

In their own words ‘New Gallery Jumble is a place to shop with a clear conscience. With a heartfelt belief in sustainability, stalls offer only up-cycled, re-purposed or second hand things in the form of quality hand crafted creations’.

The last Jumble took place on the 16th July, and it was marked as the first one supported by Hato. We printed the promo in lovely teal yellow and black, and managed to up-cycle some some test prints by printing on the other side, a perfect environmental trade for us both. The next Jumble will take place on 20th August, here’s the event info.

Open Books is a project aiming to explore the ‘mise en abime’ of the object book as well as to research the use of books as an exhibited material.

This publication, Volumes ABC, was produced in two steps. Printed ahead of the exhibition, Volumes A+B served as a documentation tool and caption for the public. Extended later by Volume C, the three volumes become then a trace of the exhibition.

Last saturday 23rd July, saw the official Launch (lunch) for Studio cookbook.

Using the Bökship as the setting for this momentous feast of foods, cultures and literature we set the table and invited the guests. Along with the 12 studio’s and practitioners who were invited to make a dish a whole host of book hungry Londoner’s descended upon the Cambridge Heath Road shop.

The cuisines came as well travelled as the turnout and it’s fair to say we all tried something new that day.

Of the home made bread, the foraged for chutneys, pastry surprises, charming cheese delights, traditional recipes to contemporary experiments, there was no shortage of flavourful foods. A huge thank you has to go to everyone that contributed and helped out with the event, all those that turned up, all those that ate, shared and Eleanor from Bökship for putting up the space. The cookbooks are available online and at the Bökship.

The social aspect and initial aim of the cookbook was realised on saturday and showed that a meal, when shared can be the perfect setting for the swapping of idea’s the forming of friendships and the birth of great new recipes. The past 6 weeks we’ve been working with cultural guide and resource guide recuperate towards their show for Winchester school of Art graduates PDYE (£$¥€). Recuperate arranged for a sale of artworks where by the first 15 sold for £1 the following 10 for £3 and so on. On the opening night the quee for the shop spanned the whole exhibition!

We also held a small workshop with the students before their week of their show. Some fantastic work from the graduates. Well done!

Last week saw the opening of the RCA show. We were more than happy to print our friends work to help with their exhibition. First up is Sophie Demay with Department 21 (left).

And next was some work for TOC (Erik Hartin, Maël Fournier-Comte, Afonso Martins and Sophie Demay.)

TOC is a display of work which is part of a context, of a continuum of ideas, examples of which are displayed here alongside projects of our own. The TOC is a rhizome of credits, acknowledgments and quotes. The TOC is a slow space, guided by a slow way of working.

Lately we’ve been getting to print four colour runs, which is great fun. The top set of images are from printmaker Poppy Jones, we printed this with Medium blue at a low %, Red, Yellow and black.

The next set are for FatCat RECORDS.

Presenting the Pretty—Ugly catalogue, as printed and bound on-site at The Gopher Hole over the course of two days in April 2011. We have here over 100 pages worth of interviews (OK-RM and We Have Photoshop), essays (Ken Hollings), discussions (Fraser Muggeridge, Holger Jacobs), and an index of the “pretty ugly” works that were most generously donated to our exhibition (Bendita Gloria, James Langdon, Zak Kyes, and many more).

Pretty—Ugly was a series of events organised by the second year students of MA Communication design at Central Saint Martins. “Pretty ugly” is a casual phrase and a paradox imbued with a range of subtexts: aesthetics and anti-aesthetics, desire and repulsion, interest and disinterest, polish and sincerity…  Through workshops, an exhibition, a series of talks and an auction, we sought to raise a critical discussion on the subject of contemporary “undesign.”

We often receive emails from designers, classes and students for studio visits. Last week we were fortunate enough to have two visits. One was a group of final year students from various studies (business, fashion, accounts) who wanted to take a short course into graphic design. The course was lead by Karen Lacroix, who runs uncanny editions.

The next group were a interactive design students from Kolding School from Denmark.  They are looking to print an information design publication that they have been working on with a local school near their home town. Matias who organised the visit runs the following blog.

Last week the students from the Ma Communication Design from Central Saint Martins popped round. Over the next few weeks we will be working with them to produce a publication from their exhibition/talks/auction/workshop/publication space Pretty–Ugly, exploring the paradox of ‘designed and undesigned’.

OpenBooks (Volumes) is a publication that was launched conjointly with the eponymous exhibition, in February 2011, London.
The OpenBooks project aims to explore the use of books as an exhibited material.

Artist Céline Condorelli and RCA student Sophie Demay (department 21) popped in today to run some test prints for a project that will be exhibited in few weeks.

For this piece Céline has been collecting the ‘front page’ of newspapers from all over the world which have inturn been cropped and printed on the riso using its scanning bed.

In the few weeks before tic Toc the Riso here at Hato was being slightly uncooperative. Which basically meant we had to print all 24 artists over the course of just one weekend. The 5 of us locked away in Dalston taking it in turns to print and or go on beer/food runs. There’s a few photo’s of that weekend, but some shall never be shown to the public ever.

The 24 hours flew by for tic toc, opening just over a week ago now, last thursday we filled Stephies disused Dry cleaners to the, freshly painted, rafters with all sorts of print happy customers. The weather was good, the beer was flowing and the conversations a plenty.

From that night it was clear that we’d have a good 24 hours. We opened shop, Friday, Saturday, and finally Sunday. If you managed to pop along then thanks very much, I hope we managed to meet you. I can’t count the amount of interesting people we spoke to over such a short space of time. But for those of you that didn’t manage to make it down, you’ll be pleased to hear, all the prints will now be available online through our shop here at HatoPress.

We’ve also just donated 1 of each print to some fellow creatives who are throwing a fundraiser sale for Japan at Jaguar shoes, the weekend of the 2nd April. You can find them here. Residing under the name EGAKU. (timeout event listing)

These are the 24 syllables that are ringing from the illustration collective efdeay, as they prepare themselves, and their chosen illustrators work, to line the walls of a now redundant dry cleaners on Phoenix Road in the hearty North Borough of Camden.

With a true pop-up ethos, 24 hours echo’s through the curatorial choices the collective have made, inviting 24 artists, and promising a very limited print run of 24. Each submitted piece has gone from concept to print in just 24 hours as well as the shop being open, you’ve guessed it, for 24 hours over 3 days. March 18th – 19th – 20th

The now graduated collective is celebrating the end of a creative residency with HatoPress specialist Risograph print and publishing house working from Dalston.

In-keeping with their funmanifesto, the collective pulls their collaborative strengths together and presents them to the public. Inviting a new generation to play with art.

special delivery! This week efdeay took a delivery of some rather spring themed crates that will play a part in their shop that’s due to pup up in March. Keep your eyes on this one.

Last week saw the lauch of Open Books exhibition at the RCA. The project, a collaboration between ManyStuff and Sophie Demay. The  aim of Open Books is to collect and highlight some initiatives which opens up minds and give cause for reflection. The exhibition took on a library asethetic but got viewers to bookmark pages and sections that appealed to them, allowing an after thought from the exhibiton, to be able to visually map the points of a book that people are drawn to and also collecting their annonmous comments upon the book. We printed the publication that ran alongside the exhibition – a 3 colour 3 stock wiro bound book.

The project was sponsored by Laurence King Publishing.

Each person has a unique perspective of the world that we live in. We all register different elements and react to them accordingly. Memories and experiences are specific to the individual. Decisions that we make and impressions that we have are not only the outcome of our personal interpretation, but are also effected by those around us, they are the result of a chain reaction. It is these different perspectives and the journey of transformation with which we are interested in. Through a series of writing and drawing experiments we want to explore this process seeing where and how information is altered, adapted and lost.

An overview of work produced over the last month and just before Christmas.

Little update from today. With just Drew and I in the studio, we got down to collating pages for the next Hato note books. While Drew painted up what looks like some sort of propaganda for a new cult, and together we experimented with some textures, patterns, and yet more eyes.

This selection of short texts, edited by Lily Hall and designed by Cody Lee Barbour, was commissioned to accompany Their Wonderlands, an exhibition curated by They Are Here at Grey Area, Brighton from the 5 December 2010 – 22 January 2011. Writers were offered an open invitation to contribute a piece of text of their choice, with the only condition that they should take the role of the imaginary and make-believe in contemporary society as a starting point. The resulting collection of written pieces was collated with the intention of contextualising, playing with and extending the presence of the exhibition beyond the temporary gathering of works that comprise it.

Also this week Drew and Ross made sure to run off some present prints, just in time for Christmas. Drew’s ‘Grandad’s Magic-Hands’ a reprint of some drawings that currently reside in Urban Outfitters in Brighton.

And Ross’ 5 colour winter Solstice; thought up, designed and printed today. An alternative reasoning behind Christmas, ‘It’s Not all about Presents and Jesus’. Limited runs of each.

Continuing our No.1 Series Drew and I are nearly done with all the illustrations, and will be completing print, and a mini lookbook catalogue of the series in the very soon future.

Wednesday’s afternoon was spent experimenting with colour combination for the mighty duo Andrew Thorpe and Ross Bennett’s forthcoming publication – No.1

The book will be a celebration of our love for music and with this project using past christmas number 1s as a starting point for our illustration. Taking the titles as a source to create two separate images, with two very different visual expressions.

Makin Jan Ma writes stories and scripts and he makes clothes for his characters. He makes films for his stories while the characters wear their clothes in the films.
