Francis Upritchard’s considered ink drawings invite us into her surreal and, at times, haunting world.
Mermaids call us beneath a surface of curious, majestical figures, to explore a sub-aquatic chorus of strange and angular life-forms. Upritchard brings life to her brush drawings by allowing the material to guide her hand.
There is a respect for the medium, specific to an artist who often works with sculpture, through which the material has been selected for its qualities and not fought against. This achieves a style of drawing which translates eloquently into the medium of Risograph, through which every bristle of the brush becomes visible, echoing the candid retelling of an ancient story being translated through generations.Francis Upritchard is a New Zealand-born artist, living and working between London, Italy and New-Zealand.
Her work explores themes of narrative, time and empathy, seamlessly interweaving elements of mythology, science fiction and the personal experience, to construct a thoughtful and often uncanny body of work. Upritchard’s use of medium is considered and playful, and often steps between delicate watercolour forms, decorated ceramic urns, and angular rubber creatures.
